OpenAI introduced Operator on January 23, 2025. This AI-powered agent can handle complex web-based activities, from browsing to typing, and perform the tasks for users. It's another milestone in AI development, which brings us closer to delegative AI assistance.
To better understand the implications and capabilities of this solution, we spoke with Sergii Bataiev, Director of Architecture and Technology at ELEKS.
The initial release of OpenAI's Operator demonstrates significant potential despite its beta limitations. The autonomous task execution capability represents a notable advancement in AI assistance, particularly in data gathering and automated content generation workflows.
Firstly, its autonomous browsing functionality proves effective for complex research tasks and automated content generation. The system operates in the background with a push notification system, demonstrating thoughtful UX design.
Additionally, the system is designed to act as an experienced computer user, leveraging a prompt engineering approach that simulates 20 years of computing expertise when handling tasks. This allows it to better understand and execute complex computer operations as a knowledgeable remote coworker would.
The system's ability to generate responses considering the context is a little bit limited. We're also seeing some efficiency issues, such as when execution of basic operations can take longer than expected. Additionally, frequent user confirmation requests suggest conservative safety protocols.
Cross-platform availability, particularly mobile integration, positions the Operator as a potential market disruptor by providing desktop-grade browsing capabilities in a mobile environment.
OpenAI Operator is a digital assistant that helps users navigate websites and complete online tasks. It represents an advancement in AI systems that can take on more complex online activities on behalf of users.
Operator is an AI agent capable of accessing and interacting with the web pages to complete tasks autonomously.
The breadth of knowledge and understanding that ELEKS has within its walls allows us to leverage that expertise to make superior deliverables for our customers. When you work with ELEKS, you are working with the top 1% of the aptitude and engineering excellence of the whole country.
Right from the start, we really liked ELEKS’ commitment and engagement. They came to us with their best people to try to understand our context, our business idea, and developed the first prototype with us. They were very professional and very customer oriented. I think, without ELEKS it probably would not have been possible to have such a successful product in such a short period of time.
ELEKS has been involved in the development of a number of our consumer-facing websites and mobile applications that allow our customers to easily track their shipments, get the information they need as well as stay in touch with us. We’ve appreciated the level of ELEKS’ expertise, responsiveness and attention to details.
