1. Why is SAP ERP stronger than custom agentic apps?
It comes down to six things: integration, data consistency, compliance, scalability, process control, and industry fit. SAP was built from the ground up to be the backbone of the enterprise — agentic apps generally weren't.
Take integration, for example. In the finance industry, SAP unifies core banking, accounting, supply chain, HR, and procurement into a single system, so everything works together by default. Agentic apps, on the other hand, tend to operate in silos and need extensive work just to connect with the rest of the business.
Data consistency works the same way. SAP acts as a single source of truth, so every department is looking at the same numbers. Disconnected custom apps don't have that guarantee, which means they risk creating conflicting or outdated data across the business.
And then there's scale. SAP is built to handle high transaction volumes across multiple regions and thousands of users without breaking down. Custom apps often start strong but struggle to keep up once that level of complexity kicks in.

SAP ERP serves as the integrated system of record for transactions. It enforces controls such as segregation of duties and authorisation, manages master data as a single source of truth, provides proven audit and compliance frameworks, and handles global localisation to meet regional legal and tax requirements. These are the foundational, trust-critical functions of the enterprise.
4. Where do custom agentic apps provide the most value?
In the areas SAP isn't optimised for. Agentic apps excel at:

- Core financial processes. Accounting, reporting, and compliance are too high-stakes to hand over to agents operating on their own.
- Cross-functional consistency. ERPs keep finance, HR, supply chain, and procurement aligned on the same data and rules something standalone agents aren't built to guarantee.
- Auditability and governance. Agentic apps generally lack the mature controls ERPs have developed over decades of regulatory scrutiny.
- Regulatory complexity. Meeting legal and tax requirements across multiple jurisdictions is a heavy, specialised lift — exactly what ERPs are purpose-built to handle.
6. How do SAP ERP and agentic apps complement each other?
They are not competitors, but complementary systems. SAP should remain the system of record and control layer, while agentic apps add speed, flexibility, and improved user experience on top of it.
The organisations that get the most value won't be the ones choosing between the two. They'll be the ones that use agentic apps to make their SAP investment work harder. That means faster workflows, smarter automation, and a better experience for the people who use the system every day.
