Summary

TechnipFMC is a global oil and gas enterprise offering energy sector clients full project life-cycle services. It needed to modernize its centralized business system, a terminal automation app, to deliver better performance and scalability. By utilising our re-engineering and cloud expertise, we helped TechnipFMC improve its client management processes, boost reliability, and tap into new opportunities and markets.
The situation

TechnipFMC wanted a technological and functional modernisation of its centralised business system

TechnipFMC provides its clients with FuelFACS comprised of a local facility business system and centralised business system that automates end-to-end business and operational processes throughout refined petroleum and lubricants terminals. It manages every aspect of product movement, terminal access and entry, producing bill of ladings, reconciliation of product inventory, and ERP integration. Launched in the early 2000s, FuelFACS needed a major technological revamp to improve performance and scalability as well as to decrease support costs and manpower. TechnipFMC also wanted to move away from costly on-premises customisations and upgrades for every client.

The solution

ELEKS rebuilt the platform and updated its architecture to fit the cloud

The ELEKS team started with a 2-week client visit to collect system artefacts, clarify the client’s ultimate architecture vision and kick-off development.

The team comprehensively reverse-engineered TechnipFMC’s centralised business system, recreating the existing mechanics, controls and business logic of the app.

FuelFACS was implemented as a single-page web app with an infrastructure updated to fit the cloud.

ELEKS’ experts helped migrate the FuelFACS web app to Azure. The migration solved performance issues and allowed for the centralised propagation of updates and customisations, thus eliminating the necessity to host the app on the client’s side.

One of the major advantages of ELEKS’ cooperation with TechnipFMC was the gradual transition to Agile principles within its development and product management team. Agile helped improve the development process by increasing customer engagement and reducing time to market.

The result

Support costs dropped for the TechnipFMC’s business system while its resilience and flexibility increased

Implementing a revamped FuelFACS system allowed TechnipFMC to change its client engagement model. With the app hosted in the cloud, customer IT management of Microsoft patch updates and product upgrades to stay on supported Microsoft operating system are no longer required. In addition to lowering IT support costs, system availability is close to 24/7, scalable with customer user demand, and has reduced downtime when updating the software.
